Session Overview:

In this session participants will learn how to use 3 different online programs to teach "Internet of Things" lessons to secondary students. Make Code Adafruit, Trinket, and TinkerCAD are all online simulator programs that allow students to program projects using either code blocks or by writing lines of code. Participants will write programs that control simulated computing boards and sensors. The 3 focus programs provide access and interest through fun projects for students who may not normally choose a Computer Science Pathway.

Participants will be provided with starter projects. The links below in resources include the three simulator sites that will be showcased in the session. Participants who would like to experiment alongside the presentation will need to make accounts at each sight (recommend using your Google credentials to create your account). In addition to the links and simulators, additional sites for researching projects, documentation, and tutorials are listed below.

This is a repeat session on Wednesday (6pm) and Thursday (6pm)

Facilitator Bio:

Ian runs the computer science department at ACE Charter High School in Camarillo and teaches mathematics part time at Oxnard College. While he began his teaching career as a high school math teacher, Ian has recently focused on teaching computer and programming courses at the high school. Ian enjoys teaching Internet of Things (IoT) and frequently uses concepts, lessons, and resources from his IoT course in his other courses. Ian attempts to showcase how coding and microcontroller boards can be fun and easy! His general excitement as he works with his students hopefully communicates a sense of caring and support. Ian hopes to create multiple opportunities for success when he teaches. Ian possesses an Information and Communication Technologies CTE Credential.
