What does it look like?

When you use the Google Assignment 1.3, it works very much like Google Classroom does (very much...but not exactly!).

The teacher creates a template in Google that you want each student to use their own copy to complete the assignment. For example, my Smart Start: Cat vs Dog Frayer assignment
The teacher creates a new Assignment in Canvas:
- Give the assignment a name (make sure it does not have external tool as a submission type YET)
- Add any pertinent information and instructions to the assignment as normal
  - If you want to grade using a Canvas rubric, set the rubric up FIRST by saving this assignment, and attaching the rubric, then going back in to Edit the assignment submission type.
- Set the remaining criteria as normal:
  - points
  - assignment group
  - submission type (see next step instructions)
  - due date
  - assignment window (optional)

Submission Type Setup:

To use the Google Assignments LTI, complete the following steps:

In the Assignment > Edit settings> Submission Type > choose External Tool
Scroll to find the Google Drive Cloud Assignment tool:
If you haven't yet, you will need to Authorize (Link) your Google Account and link it to your school Google Drive
Find the template you created in step 1 in your Google Drive
You will now see the Google Assignments screen, very much like Google Classroom!

What does the student see?

When the student opens the assignment in Canvas, they see your instructions and a button to "Load Google Assignment":

The student will need to click the "Load 'Assignment Name' in a New Window" button and may need to "Link" their account if they haven't done so already:

The student will then see the assignment details and if you attached a template, the student will have a copy that is shared with just them, they can add additional files or create Google files within this view, and when finished with their work Submit their assignment.

Once submitted, they can see that it was returned to the teacher:

Once the teacher grades and returns the assignment (steps below), the student will see their score in their Canvas Grades, but they will not see the feedback on their actual assignment in Canvas. They will need to return to the actual assignment page, then click on the "Load" button again to go into the Google page to see their feedback.

How does the teacher grade it?

Go to the Assignment either through the module, through the Assignments Index page, through your gradebook, or through the calendar event.

Click on the "Load 'AssignmentName'" button to go into Google Assignments and see your list of students and submitted date. Here you can click on the document name to go into the student submission and grade, score, provide feedback:

In SpeedGrader cannot see the students document(s), but you can see the score(s) of each submission.
